Inverness is the home of the Fraser
Clan and as to be expected a lot people in any given town would have the same surname.
And so it appears that an extension or nickname was attached so that people within
the community could differentiate between one Andrew Fraser and another.
Thomas and Margaret Fraser married in 1792 one of their children was Andrew Fraser (Boo Bah) who in 1819 married Jean (or Jane) McKenzie, daughter of Donald McKenzie and Christian Fraser.
They lived in Abriachan (see picture right), which is on the top of the hills overlooking Loch Ness. (9 miles west of Inverness and five miles east of Drumnadrochit). Ann Nichols writes: When I visited Abriachan in 1999, it was a community are scattered crofts and houses along the singletrack road, a post box and and delete all. It appeared to be sheep farming community. Outside the village hall there is a large wooden sculpture of carved hands. By the roadside there is a wooden board with the cartoon story depicting Donald Fraser who was caught by the gaugers (excisemen).
Abriachan was renowned for its illegal whisky making, and Donald Fraser was well-known for making whisky in the still at the east end of his croft. On one occasion he was caught by the gaugers and taken to his home. Donald's wife refused to let him be taken away until they had dinner (stroopach). She laced Donald's tea with tobacco and he became violently ill and was put to bed. While the gaugers waited outside the door, his friends cut some turf from the roof and placed it on Donald's chest. The doctor was sent for, and exclaimed that 'Donald had grown a bust". The gaugers left and Donald and his friends had a drink of the "malted barley water". Could this Donald Fraser be a relative of Andrew Fraser?
One of Andrew and Jane's children was Thomas Fraser, who was born and 1839 and died circa. 1909.
